About Us

St. Johns the Baptist, Dundee

St. Johns is a small inner city congregation slotted into a busy shopping thoroughfare and a £400,000 restoration programme was completed in June, 2005. The congregation has a tradition of caring for each other and this has become more important as we are gradually embracing a Local Collaborative Ministry model. The congregation realises the need to ascertain the needs of the local community and to involve the congregation in it. A social committee organises many activities for fundraising and fellowship throughout the year.
The Eucharist (1982 Liturgy) is celebrated at 10.15am on Sunday and at 10.30am on Thursday (1970 Liturgy). During Advent and Lent there are midweek services and occasional ecumenical services are held at other times.
Significant Changes

We have a Team made up of the Priest-in-Charge, a Non-Stipendiary Priest and Lay Readers.
We bought back the church hall, sold over twenty years ago, and this became the catalyst for inovations. The Boomerang Project employs a Manager/Community Worker and an Administrator/Support Worker and enables the church to be involved in the local community. The church building is an essential part of the local community, local people enter the church hall during the week and the congregation has a vehicle for volunteering and participating.
Biggest Opportunity

We have completed a Mission 21 course taking an in-depth look at ourselves and continue to look at the Diocesan Mission Strategy and how we can further our own Mission.
We are exploring LCM (Local Collaborative Ministry) and are keen to embrace it wholeheartedly. We have an ongoing programme of learning activity and sharing.
We are in the middle of a Restoration programme, which will improve the appearance of the church and provide us with halls with excellent facilities including a new kitchen and toilets, and a lift for the disabled.

Lastly, the refurbished hall will benefit the Boomerang Project which provides a centre in the heart of the Stobswell community to stimulate community involvement and development. Activities include a Lunch Club for the elderly, a Home Visiting service, a Parent and Toddler Group, a Dance Group, social evenings and IT Training. Another group formed from Boomerang is Branching Out - a self-help group for people with mental health issues.

St. John's is a Fair Trade Church. We only use fair trade tea, sugar and coffee. Fair Trade is an alternative system of world trade which ensures that farmers and producers of crafts are given a fair and guaranteed price for the work they do and the goods they produce.

POLICY STATEMENT

The Scottish Episcopal Church recognises the special status of all vulnerable people, particularly those who, becasue they are affected by disability, mental disorder, illness, infirmity or ageing, are unable to protect themselves from abuse, or more vulnerable to being abused than persons who are not so affected.

Because of their vulnerability, such people will be awarded special protection.  They are to be respected as persons in their own right, created and loved by God.   We, therefore commit ourselves to take all steps within our power to keep vulnerable people safe from harm and from an abuse of trust.
